Online communities

provide the web address and the name of the community you are investigating?
www.facebook.com

What is the brief or focus of this community?
The Facebook website helps you connect and share with the people in your life.

what services are provided? how interactive is this site? how can people contribute?
A email service, game applications and search engine that helps people find other people, provides other peoples details like birthdays, interests a wall page updating the movements of peoples activities , photos are shared events are advertised charitys are set up even missing persons have be posted on facebook.

Consider material presented during the lecture and make comment on why people choose to contribute?
Facebook is a great tool to stay connected with friends and family who live overseas or in different cities, its also a great time waster and can be comical relief when your working day is a bit dull. People contribute photos of their children, hoildays and celebrations in order to make the written word have a visual also this enables their friends a full picture of the events in their lives.

Here is an example of someone who has commented on a friends photo
France Louvet Great photos Sally! Looks like it was a success... great jobbie job!!!

Considering material presented during the course and make comment on the potential ethical issues that may arise in this community. The biggest ethical issue facing online users of face book is posting photos of people without their knowledge and this photo then becomes the property of facebook, you have no control over your own image!

consider material presented during the lecture and make comment on the benefits this community holds over the traditional notions of community. the benefits of facebook is the on going connection you have with people you want to be staying connected to, events are posted and party invites are always available. Its easy to get in contact with people you have not seen in a long time and its a much better email interactive site.

consider material presented during the lecture and make comment what this community lacks or can not provide which traditional communities can. What facebook lacks is reality, like a lot of on-line communities people can change their photos so that they look better, change their age be younger older and the strangest thing about face-book is having friendships with people you do not know well or have never met before who in reality you would not have any contact with. In traditional communities you take people on face value rather than a modified account of someone on line.
